CHAPTER 12

Lori-Ann Collins stood in the shade of a tree watching the tourists snap pictures of the Smithsonian Institute Buildings across the street. It was a pleasant day, with a gentle noontime breeze, warmed to about fifty-five degrees by the bright sun. Soon the streets filled with hundreds of young men and women headed for lunch.

She waited ten minutes for Ronald Baxter to appear. His tall, lean frame and sharp, handsome features coupled with his impeccable attire made him stand out in the crowd. This was the man she had lived with off and on for the last three years. Her lover. That was a laugh. They had made love about once a month. He was always too busy, or too tired. Same old story. She should have known. She watched him scanning the crowd looking for her, and stepped out from under the shade into the sunshine.

“Ronald, over here,” she waved to him.

Baxter spotted her and quickened his pace. He wore a lightweight double-breasted navy-blue suit with a striped Repp tie and burgundy broughams. Mr. Assistant Undersecretary of State for Eastern Europe. How convenient for her.

He came up to her, slicked back his straight blond hair with his palm, and said, “Hello, darling. Is everything all right?”

She smiled back. “Not as right as it could be, Ronald. But we can remedy that. Thanks for meeting me.”

“Would you like to go for lunch? I should be able to get away for an hour or so. I know a great French restaurant not far from here. We can walk if you’d like, or take a cab.”

“This is more important than lunch, Ronald. It’s about us.”

“Us? And it can’t be discussed over lunch? How uncivilized.” He flashed his big white teeth.

Lori-Ann stood with her hands on her hips, feet slightly apart. “Ronald, let’s stop bullshitting each other, shall we?”

“Whatever do you…?”

“I want you to stop cheating on me.”

The smile left Baxter’s face, replaced by a little boy who-me? expression. “Honestly, darling. You’re the only woman in my life. I swear it.”

“I believe that, Ronald. You know what I mean.”

“Really, I…”

Lori-Ann reached into her handbag and extracted a brown envelope. She thrust it at him. “A friend gave these to me the other day. I can’t tell you how embarrassed I was.”

Baxter stood there, looking puzzled at the envelope in her hand.

“Go ahead, take it. Now, look inside.”

Lori-Ann watched the color drain from Baxter’s face as he recognized the photos of himself sexually entangled with several other equally good-looking men. He stood there staring at her with his jaw agape. “Where … where did you get these?”

“What does it matter? Someone at your little party showed them off to a friend, who passed them along to someone else, until they trickled down to the person who gave them to me.”

Baxter replaced the photos in the envelope and stuffed them in his jacket pocket. “I’ll destroy them. They got me stoned at that party, and set up these pictures while I was unconscious.”

“Nice try, Ronald, darling.
